The City of Metolius (el. 2,530′, zip code 97741) is located in Jefferson County, four miles south of Madras and four miles north of Culver on SW Culver HWY (aka HWY 361). The seeds of the modern town can be traced to a colony of German Methodists who settled in the area in the late 1800s. The first church in the county was built by the colony in 1903 and the town itself was platted in 1909. The Oregon Trunk Railroad in arrived 1911 and shortly after a railroad station, roundhouse, and post office were built. By 1917, the town had grown to 1,500 people and thrived for several years. However, in the 1920s, Bend emerged as the main railroad hub in the area and Metolius began to decline.
Today, the town is a quiet bedroom community of Madras with a population of just over 700 people. Despite this, it is an incorporated city with a mayor and city council. The main railroad line in central Oregon still passes through town, but the original station no longer services it. Instead, it has been preserved as a museum of the town’s past and a meeting hall of the town’s present. Surrounded entirely by agricultural fields, the town is home to several small businesses, a few restaurants & churches, two city parks, and Metolius Elementary School.
In Madras, signage routes travelers seeking Cove Palisades State Park from HWY 97 on to HWY 361. Because Metolius is the last town they pass through, it bills itself as the “gateway to Lake Billy Chinook.” Though, Culver can make a similar claim to those approaching from the south.
