Prineville (el. 2,868′, zip code 97754) is the only incorporated city in Crook County and also serves as the county seat. It is located thirty miles southeast of Madras on HWY 26 and twenty miles east of Redmond on HWY 126. Founded in 1877, the city was named for the first merchant in town, Barney Prine. Up until 1911, Prineville was the major town in central Oregon. At that time, a north-south railroad line from The Dalles was built through Redmond and Bend – bypassing Prineville entirely. To keep the town alive, the residents of Prineville established their own railroad line that connected to the north-south tracks.
Les Schwab Tire Centers was founded in Prineville in 1952 and maintained its corporate headquarters there until 2008 when it was relocated to a new location on Bend’s north side. However, the company still maintains a large distribution center in Prineville. More recently, both Facebook and Apple established large data centers near the Prineville Airport in 2010 and 2012 respectively.
Like most central Oregon towns, outdoor recreational opportunities go hand in hand with Prineville. Two popular reservoirs can be found in the area. Prineville Reservoir State Park lies south of town and the smaller Ochoco Reservoir is just east of town. The Ochoco National Forest is also found to the east.
Other unincorporated areas in Crook County include the community of Powell Butte, which lies roughly halfway between Redmond and Prineville on the northern slope of Powell Butte. The Brasada Ranch destination resort was established in 2005 on Powell Butte’s southwest slope. It is fourteen miles from Redmond and twenty miles from either Prineville or Bend. Several sparsely populated ranching communities lie further east from Prineville. Post is located twenty-five miles southeast of Prineville on HWY 380. It also has the claim to fame of being the geographical center of the State of Oregon and is comprised of a post office and general store/tavern. Paulina, named for Paiute Chief Paulina, is a further thirty miles east from Post on HWY 380 and Suplee is another nineteen miles on from Paulina.
