The Deschutes County city of Sisters (el. 3,182′, zip code 97759) was initially founded in 1888. Though today’s town seems to be an artifact of that time in terms of architectural design, it actually has its roots in a revitalization program that was initiated in the early 1970s. Around the same time that Brooks Resources was developing Black Butte Ranch, it offered monetary incentives to help assist Sisters business owners to transform their building facades into an old west theme. In 1978, the city council voted to formalize this look into design guidelines that have maintained this character ever since.

Today, the four-by-eight block commercial area is a pedestrian-friendly community full of shops, galleries, and restaurants. Additionally, each year the town hosts a number of events including the Sisters Folk Festival, Sisters Quilt Outdoor Show, and the Sisters Rodeo. Black Butte Ranch, Santiam Pass, and Hoodoo Ski Area are located northwest of town on HWY 20. Mackenzie Pass is located due east on HWY 242. The city of Redmond is located 20 miles east on HWY 242, while Bend can be found 23 miles southeast on HWY 20. For more information, please visit the Sisters Chamber of Commerce.
